RMRK comes to Moonriver

Moonbeam announced the integration of Moonriver with RMRK, an extensible NFT system on Kusama. As part of this integration, the teams will collaborate to develop Solidity standards for Kusama assets based on RMRK. This will allow Moonriver and other EVM chains to work with the RMRK NFT infrastructure, providing enhanced features for NFT developers, creators, and collectors in the Kusama ecosystem.

About RMRK

The RMRK protocol is a NFT Legos system that allows developers and designers to create composite, equipped, multi-chain NFTs. NFTs can visually change depending on the other NFTs they own, but these NFTs are also promising because they can be equipped with unrelated future projects that are not even planned yet.

RMRK comes to Moonriver with a grant. Let us explain what this means.

Grant

The grant is for 6 months with checkpoints every two months. These are:

1. NFTs with multiple resources, nested NFTs, and a user interface to test them.

2. Conditional rendering, as well as mechanisms for nested NFTs, and a user interface to test them.

3. Fractionalization and full integration of all features into Singular. NFT contracts will be mostly compatible with ERC721, but because of the inherent limitations of ERC721 it is impossible to achieve full compatibility.

Implications

Since every EVM standard is essentially just a hack of how to interpret user data in a chain, and with NFT this data is basically lines, which are notoriously expensive to store, every operation with NFT by default is expensive.

That’s why pallets in substrate chains have the unprecedented advantage that their data structures can be optimized to store the data we need, just the way we need it.

However, because of the popularity of RMRK standards and their incredible usefulness compared to anything else, and the incredible growth of Moonriver, it makes sense to make the same features available to Moonriver and, later, Moonbeam, no matter how expensive. It’s necessary and forward-thinking.

As part of this effort, RMRK is working on two things:

1. Completing the implementation of a bridge that mints NFT RMRK as debt receipts on MOVR, which simplifies RMRK functionality to simple NFT ERC721 to enjoy the volumes of EVM networks.

2. Full RMRK functionality in the form of Solidity contracts, the potential of which is discussed below.

Potential

Solidity-based RMRK capabilities are bidirectional:

1. New projects can create advanced NFTs suitable for Polkadot and Kusama advanced multichain environments.

2. Existing projects can be transformed into truly useful, interactive, reactive, evolving NFTs with dedicated and shared savings elements for long-term liquidity and direct interoperability.

In fact, two major projects will be launched in the MVP version of the RMRK Solidity contracts in the very near future.
